Home, Home on the Range…

Yellowstone National Park is a favorite of mine.   Yellowstone has a varied topography,  from mountains to valleys, rocky cliffs to smooth lakes, rivers and waterfalls, mud pots and hot springs, geysers and marshes,  and more.  Then there are the animals…grizzlies, black bear, elk,, wolves, moose, coyotes, bison…and the list goes on.  There’s never a dull moment in Yellowstone, and so much to see, no one could ever be “bored”!

Today I am concentrating on the Hayden Valley in Yellowstone.  There is a great concentration of bison in this valley, and sometimes the vehicle traffic comes to a complete stop because of the bison “traffic”!   It is truly a beautiful sight to see the bison scattered about in their natural habitat.  Sometimes you are lucky enough to get a “performance” by the bison, as in my second photo!  As with all wild animals, bison are nothing to fool around with.  You must keep your distance, as they can charge on the spur of the moment and they are capable of moving very fast.

In the Hayden Valley in Yellowstone National Park, the bison gather in great numbers.

Two male bison going “head to head” in this photo.

A little altercation or heated discussion, perhaps? 😉

  1. Stunning! Love the vivid blues again! These are really beautiful pictures, Judy, your passion shines through the lens.

    • I have been lucky, yes. We drive. It takes us two nights on the road with long driving days. It might take you three nights on the road.
Thanks for your comments, Elyas! The Adirondack Mountains are closer to you and are beautiful. I think they are only a few hrs away.
I spent many summers camping there as a child. It’s a beautiful part of New York State.

  2. Sounds like an amazing place, beautiful and interesting with the wide variety of wild life. Maybe one day I’ll get to visit. Love the first picture, the colours are really intense. 🙂

    • Thank you, Jim. I wasn’t about to get close! I always had the car between them and me! (a lot of folks don’t pay heed to warnings and march right toward them for that “special photo”…scary!)

  3. The second photo is quite a capture! We have been stopped before in Yellowstone by bison showing traffic who is boss! I don’t argue. However, I cringed at the people walking towards bison (and even bull moose) to get a photo. You could tell the animals were annoyed. I keep my distance. Getting that close is not worth it for me – not for any photo.

    • Exactly! I stay in the car, or stand on the OTHER side of the car and take a photo over the roof! I want that distance! When you visit the parks you see all kinds of craziness, I agree. Three years ago, we saw a young boy pulling his younger sister by the hand way beyond the guard rail toward the edge of a cliff over Yellowstone Canyon. I nearly lost my dinner. Their parents were watching! Other people were standing at the pull-out too. I just wanted to say to the parents: are you out of your minds? That event upset me all evening.

  4. I was only able to go once about a million years ago (well, maybe more like 20) and your pictures really bring it back. We weren’t lucky enough to see anything like that 2nd picture, but we did see some bison walking along the road. Beautiful pictures – thank you for bringing those memories back!

    • Sheila, you’re welcome! When a bunch of girlfriends went about 5 years ago, we kept seeing an old bison walking on the shoulder of the roads. We nicknamed him Elvis! I’ll have to post a photo of him I took from inside the car! A little boy was chasing after him. People do all sorts of weird things. A year later, my husband and I went back and I just know I saw dear Elvis again, plodding along! So I’ll bet it was a young Elvis you saw! 😉 That second photo was during mating season I think….so there was a lot of activity.

    • Thank you, Amira. I think these guys would get mighty warm in the Maldives. Do you have yaks, goats, sheep or any thick coated animals there?

  5. Oh ! I would love to go there ! Just reading you gave me goosebumps ! It must be something to see and witness these altercations between the bisons ! I would have to pinch myself to make sure I’m not dreaming… We’re so use to see this only on TV or magazines.
I love the contrast of colours in the first photo and the lighting is beautiful in the second and so sharp !
Did you visit Yellowstone more than once ?
    VERY beautiful photos Judy !

  6. We had traveled there on a cross states camping adventure.
It was before I decided to love photo taking. Now, I’ll have
to go back again … but … no camping this time. The bones
    will not survive. ~~~~~ : – 0
    Nice capture …..

    • lol…I know what you mean! When we went camping the last time we had aero beds! 😉 A step up from those skinny little air mattresses!
Now I’ve made the decision not to tent camp where there are bears. Sooo now I find out every state has bears! haha

    • Hey..MJ! Thank you kindly. It’s a great place! Next time stop in~ you won’t regret it. PS..I sound like I work for the national park service…but I don’t!!! lol

    • Jocelyne…
Hi! I’ve been to Yellowstone 4 times, I think. It is a wondrous place, like most national or provincal parks. I guess Yellowstone differs from the others in the number and variety of geological phenomena, and the great animal sightings. Thanks so much for your lovely comments, Jocelyne! I’m on vacation for another week and I don’t have reg. internet access here. I’ll look forward to visting with you soon!
