Water Dragon Weekly Sunday Post: Silence

The Sound of Silence

“Hello darkness, my old friend

I’ve come to talk with you again

Because a vision softly creeping

Left its seeds while I was sleeping

And the vision that was planted in my brain

 Still remains

 Within the sound of silence.”

(*”The Sound of Silence”, written by Paul Simon, recorded by Paul Simon & Art Garfunkel in 1964)

Silence, quiet and stillness, seep slowly from our busy bright day into night,

as light leaves our environment and darkness covers everything we see.

Darkness, our old friend.  Not to fear, but to delight in the enveloping cocoon of silence and rest; a quiet time of day.

A time for renewal of spirit, refreshing the senses and resting the muscles from the day’s work.  Silence.

A chance to think, speak, a time to listen to others.

The sound of silence…..

*”The Sound of Silence” was written in the aftermath of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

  1. I’d forgotten how beautiful the lyrics are to The Sound of Silence. The picture compliments the words.

    Congratulations on reaching 200 posts!

  2. One of my favorite songs by this duo. I had started to write up my post wth this exact song and houghts in mind. My photo wasn’t quite fitting of the words so I kept searching for the right one. I scrapped the challenge. I’m glad I did. It’s nice to see someone else shine through with the same thoughts. Great post ….

    • Isadora…you know what they say about Great Minds! 😉 I’m sorry you didn’t do it! It would have been fun! Actually my friend, Bob, started singing the song when I told him what the theme was. Then I decided what my image was going to be. Otherwise I probably wouldn’t have even thought of the song! That’s why I thanked him!

  3. Oh yes, I do so love the silence. Probably because I get so little of it in our house. Instead, there is often too much sound – the TV will be on, but someone not watching TV, will have the computer on playing noisy games or listening to music, with no regard to those watching TV… So, I enjoy silence whenever I can. 🙂

  6. I love those lyrics and your picture goes with them perfectly. I had no idea the song was written for JFK but it’s always kind of brought tears to my eyes and now there’s even more reason for that. Really interesting – thanks for putting that up and congratulations on 200 posts (I don’t think I’ll ever make it that far)! 🙂

    • I didn’t know about JFK and the song either, Sheila. It really makes the lyrics stand out for me now. Thank you for your comments! Oh….you can make it to 200 or more! 😉 But to me it’s not the number of posts…it’s the quality. And you have that perfectly! I’ve cut down on my posts.

      • Thanks Judy! I’ve cut down a little too much since this summer has just been too crazy so far but will try to get back into the swing of it at some point. 🙂

      • As I’ve been gone a month….I certainly can understand! 🙂 It’s so hard to keep up with blog visits! Enjoy your summer on the Cape! That’s what life is all about! There’s plenty of time in the winter to catch up on things here! Take lots of pix so we can >sigh< over them in December!

      • Welcome back! Good idea too – weirdly enough, I haven’t taken many pictures yet this summer. I’ll have to get on that for winter survival.

  7. Great post Judy. I love the “sound of silence” I was a fan of Simon and Garfunkel, back in the 60s. I even used to play/sing some of their songs at the music club at school. Congratulations on 200 posts.

    • That’s cool, Jim! It does bring back many memories. My husband has the original album. Kids nowadays say: what’s a record!! 😉 I imagine someday CDs will be obsolete too! School dances….fun memories too! Thanks!

  8. 200 posts ! Wow, that’s a lot of posts ! I haven’t seen them all but I love what I’ve seen from the day I discovered your blog back in…last January I think. Congratulations Judy !
Ahhhhhh….The Sound Of Silence ! It’s a WONDERFUL song and I haven’t heard it in a looooong time, too much long time ! I went to YouTube to listen to it with the lyrics (maybe it was your link ?) and I was so happy to hear it again ! If I hadn’t read your post maybe I would have forgotten this song as I rarely listen to the 60’s music on the radio. Thank you Judy for this wonderful post ! And you chose the perfect photo for this weekly post.

  9. A perfect full moon on a night that inspired us to seek a place, a moment of silence and serenity. Words so moving, “A time for renewal of spirit, refreshing the senses and resting the muscles from the day’s work. Silence. ” Thanks.
